Essay Writing

A basic essay generally has a 5 paragraph structure. The paragraphs are broken down into introduction (with thesis), body paragraph 1, body paragraph 2, body paragraph 3, and conclusion. Each paragraph serves its own purpose in your essay. Keep reading for a detailed description of each paragraph.

Introduction

  • Start with something that will grab the readers attention and make them want to read more, make sure it is relevant to your argument.
  • A thesis statement (one sentence that explains to the reader your position on the subject/topic)
  • A brief overview of the 3 supporting elements you will discuss in the body paragraphs.

Body 1

  • Topic sentence which states the first subtopic and opens with a transition
  • Supporting details or examples
  • An explanation of how this example proves your thesis

Body 2

  • Topic sentence which states the second subtopic and opens with a transition
  • Supporting details or examples
  • An explanation of how this example proves your thesis

Body 3

  • Topic sentence which states the third subtopic and opens with a transition
  • Supporting details or examples
  • An explanation of how this example proves your thesis

Conclusion

  • Concluding Transition, Reverse “hook,” and restatement of thesis.
  • Rephrasing main topic and subtopics.
